PINT AE is the UAE profile of the Peppol International Invoice format: a structured, machine-readable layout that every electronic invoice and credit note in the UAE e-invoicing system must follow. Instead of a PDF that a human reads, a PINT AE invoice is a data file that your Accredited Service Provider (ASP) validates, transmits to your customer's ASP and reports to the Federal Tax Authority. If you have ever wondered what PINT AE is and whether you need to learn it, the short answer is that your software needs to speak it and your data needs to be clean enough to pass its checks.
Where PINT AE comes from
Peppol is an open network standard originally developed in Europe for exchanging business documents between organisations through accredited access points. Many countries have adopted it for e-invoicing because it avoids point-to-point connections between every pair of trading partners. The Peppol International Invoice model, known as PINT, is a version designed to be adapted by each country. The UAE adaptation is PINT AE.
The UAE Ministry of Finance confirmed this approach in Ministerial Decisions No. 243 and 244 of 2025, issued on 29 September 2025 and published at mof.gov.ae. The decisions set up the 5-corner model, in which an invoice travels from your business to your ASP, then to the recipient's ASP, then to the recipient, with both ASPs reporting to the FTA. PINT AE is the common language that makes that journey possible. For the wider picture, read our complete guide to UAE e-invoicing.
What a PINT AE invoice contains
Think of PINT AE as your familiar VAT tax invoice, broken into labelled boxes that a computer can check. The main groups of information are:
| Group | Typical contents | Where it comes from in your business |
|---|---|---|
| Document header | Invoice number, issue date, document type (invoice or credit note), currency | Your invoicing system |
| Seller | Legal name, address, TRN, electronic address on the network | Your company settings |
| Buyer | Legal name, address, TRN where applicable, electronic address | Your customer master data |
| Line items | Description, quantity, unit price, VAT category and rate per line | Your product or service catalogue |
| Totals | Net, VAT by rate, gross, amounts due, and references to original invoices for credit notes | Calculated by your system |
| Payment and references | Payment terms, purchase order number, contract reference | Your sales workflow |
The exact list of mandatory fields and business rules is maintained by the authorities and your ASP, and it can be refined before and during the pilot. Rather than memorising a list, make sure your software vendor or integrator tracks the official specification and updates the mapping when it changes.
Why structure matters more than appearance
With a PDF invoice, a missing TRN or a rounding difference is something your customer's accountant might notice weeks later. With PINT AE, the same problem is caught by the ASP before the invoice goes anywhere. That is good for the tax system but demanding for the business, because every invoice must be right first time or it does not count as issued.
Three categories of checks matter most:
- Presence checks. Required fields must be filled. A customer record without a legal address will fail.
- Format checks. Dates, TRNs, currency codes and VAT category codes must be in the expected form.
- Arithmetic checks. Line totals, VAT per rate and document totals must reconcile. A system that rounds at the line level while another rounds at the total level can produce a one-fils difference that triggers a rejection.
This is why UAE VAT invoice requirements and PINT AE go hand in hand: the VAT rules say what must be on the invoice; PINT AE enforces it mechanically.
PINT AE and the UAE VAT rules you already know
Nothing in PINT AE changes the VAT itself. The standard rate remains 5%, the seller's TRN must appear on tax invoices, and records must still be kept, generally for 5 years, as set out by the Federal Tax Authority. What changes is that the invoice data becomes available to the FTA at transaction level rather than only as totals in your periodic return. Over time this makes your VAT return a reconciliation of data the FTA already holds, which rewards businesses whose invoicing and accounting systems agree with each other.
Preparing your data for PINT AE
Most PINT AE failures are data failures, not software failures. A practical preparation list:
- Customer master data. Collect and verify legal names, addresses and TRNs for every business customer. Decide how you will handle consumers and customers without a TRN.
- Product and service catalogue. Give every item a clear description and a single VAT category. Remove duplicate items with different tax settings.
- Numbering. Use one sequential invoice series per legal entity and make sure credit notes reference the original invoice number.
- Rounding policy. Agree one rounding method across your ERP, POS and accounting system.
- Currency. If you invoice in foreign currency, make sure the AED equivalents and exchange rates are captured consistently.
- Storage. Article 11 of Ministerial Decision No. 243 of 2025 requires electronic documents to be stored inside the UAE. Check where your software and backups actually live; our article on UAE data residency explains the options.
What this means for your software choices
You do not need to buy a PINT AE product; you need an invoicing system that can output PINT AE and a connection to an ASP. For many businesses that is an integration layer added to their existing ERP, CRM or POS, which we describe in how to connect your CRM or ERP to UAE e-invoicing. If your invoices currently come from spreadsheets or a word processor, the realistic path is to move to a proper system during 2026 so that the format is handled for you.
Frequently asked questions
Is PINT AE the same as Peppol?
Not exactly. Peppol is the open network and the family of standards used for exchanging business documents in many countries. PINT is the Peppol International Invoice model, and PINT AE is the UAE-specific profile of it, with rules that reflect UAE VAT and the Federal Tax Authority's reporting needs. PINT AE runs on the Peppol-style 5-corner network chosen by the UAE.
Do I need to understand XML to comply with PINT AE?
No. Your software generates the PINT AE file and your Accredited Service Provider validates and transmits it. What you must understand is the data behind it: accurate customer details, TRNs, product descriptions, VAT categories and amounts. If the data in your system is clean, the format takes care of itself.
Will my customer receive a PINT AE file or a normal invoice?
Your customer's ASP receives the PINT AE document and delivers it into their software, where it appears as a normal invoice with all the usual fields. You can still send a PDF copy for convenience, but the structured document is the legal record. Businesses without their own ASP should plan to appoint one before their deadline.
What happens if my invoice fails PINT AE validation?
The ASP rejects it and returns an error describing the failing rule, for example a missing TRN or a total that does not reconcile. You correct the data in your system and resend. Because an invoice that is not transmitted on time can cost AED 100 each under Cabinet Decision No. 106 of 2025, your software should flag rejections immediately.
Does PINT AE apply to credit notes as well?
Yes. E-credit notes follow the same structured format and the same transmission path through your ASP, and they carry the same penalty of AED 100 per document, capped at AED 5,000 per month, if not issued or transmitted on time. Our article on e-credit notes under UAE e-invoicing covers the rules and examples.
How Zaini Developers can help
We are a software studio in Dubai, UAE and India, not a tax adviser or an accredited service provider. What we do is make software produce correct PINT AE documents: our FORMA ERP, Consultant CRM and ZainiPOS generate them natively, and we build the mapping and validation layer for clients who already run another system. See our services, try the invoicing flow in our live demos, or contact us to review how ready your current data is.
